Biking
In partnership with the Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition, we provide transportation, bikes, helmets, safety gear, instruction, food, and all necessary items for this free program.
*The active transportation portion of the Earn-a-Bike program is supported with funding from Washington’s Climate Commitment Act. The CCA supports Washington’s climate action efforts by putting cap-and-invest dollars to work reducing climate pollution, creating jobs, and improving public health. Vamos al Waterfront
Mountain biking is presented as a premier outdoor activity in Bellingham, but financial and logistical barriers make it an activity for the privileged. Through this program, Vamos supports Latine youth in building an active, healthy lifestyle by learning to ride bikes in ways that connect them to their environment.
On a weekly basis, Vamos brings a group of Latine youth to the Bellingham Waterfront Pump Track, where students develop foundational riding skills, and confidence in a safe, supportive setting. Beyond skill-building, youth explore biking as an alternative mode of transportation and discover the outdoor spaces and pathways their own community has to offer.
Vamos a Ganar-una-bici
Our Earn-A-Bike program now focuses on street safety, environmental awareness, and real-world riding skills that youth can use every day. Each season, a cohort of up to 13 Latine youth builds confidence through hands-on education, learning how to safely navigate roads, bike paths, and neighborhood spaces while understanding their role as riders within the community and environment. Youth develop practical skills like traffic awareness, bike handling, maintenance basics, and route safety, all while earning their own bike at the completion of the program.
In partnership with local organizations, Vamos provides bikes, helmets, safety gear, instruction, food, and transportation—at no cost to families. Guided by representative mentors and supported in their native language, participants build independence, leadership, and a deeper sense of belonging and responsibility within Whatcom County.
