Vamos a las Montañas is Vamos’ camping and backpacking program. Vamos views this program as the culminating program for Vamos youth who have experienced outdoor opportunities closer to home. Participants, ages 12 and up, join mentors on 3-day camping and backpacking trips to North Cascades National Park, Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest, and Larrabee and Spencer Spit State Parks. On trips, participants learn how to safely and joyfully spend time together outdoors. Program curriculum includes a variety of ways of connecting with the land, including Indigenous histories, settler colonial histories, and natural histories. Vamos provides culturally responsive trips that include enrollment and outreach, transportation, food, equipment, and park permits. Vamos Wilderness First Responder trained mentors lead the trips. Outcomes of the backpacking and camping program are: joy, increased comfort outdoors, camping skills, confidence, sense of place and stewardship, and understanding of ecological systems.
